Things to do in Torquay

The Great Ocean Road is filled to the brim with beautiful beaches and endless sea views. The rugged coastline lends itself perfectly to picturesque coves and charming towns that boast an easy living lifestyle and plenty of history. Torquay is one of the more popular towns along the Great Ocean Road, and is home to the famous Bells Beach.

This prominent natural landmark was the birthplace of Rip Curl and Quicksilver, and it remains an important place in the world of surfing. Marking the start point of the Great Ocean Road, Torquay is a must-visit for people who are keen to explore the rich surf culture of the region while enjoying some of the coast’s best beaches.

There are plenty of beaches to enjoy in Torquay and there’s something for everyone. If you’re looking to enjoy quality time with the family, there are a number of protected beaches that have warm shallows and pristine sands. Elsewhere, there are more adventurous beaches that are home to rich surf scenes, particularly at Bells Beach which is a little wilder than most beaches and has big swells.

A number of the surf world’s biggest brands got their start in Torquay, many of which make up the Surf City Plaza, a shopping precinct devoted entirely to the sport of surfing. Here, you can stock up on all the best brands, from Rip Curl and Quicksilver to Strapper and everything in between.

But it’s not all surfing in Torquay. In fact, there is plenty of culture and beautiful nature to explore as well. In the warm summer months, there are pretty walks to take along the sandy beaches and incredible views to soak up from breath-taking vantage points along the Surf Coast Walk. Elsewhere, visitors can drop into the Surf World Surfing Museum to learn more about the sport’s history in the region, and the Point Danger Marine Sanctuary promises excellent snorkeling conditions and a whole host of mesmerising sea creatures to discover.
