Surrounded by dense rainforest, this popular lake in north Queensland offers a range of activities.

Nestled by a tropical rainforest, the stunning Lake Eacham is just an hour’s drive from Cairns in the Atherton Tablelands region. The lake is a former volcanic crater with gorgeous blue water and is extremely calm, making it the perfect spot for a relaxing day trip destination.

Take a dip

At Lake Eacham, you can do plenty of water activities, from swimming and snorkelling, to canoeing, paddle boarding, and kayaking. For a bit more excitement, there is even a rope swing for you to swing off and plunge straight into the water.

Explore the surroundings

There are plenty of walking tracks around Lake Eacham, with the chance to explore the beautiful tropical rainforest. The rainforest offers shaded paths, keeping most of the walking tracks cool on warmer days. There are boardwalks and some tracks that are wheelchair accessible with some assistance around the lake.

The most popular walking track is the Lake Eacham circuit track, which takes around an hour to complete.

Spot some wildlife

One of the most common activities around Lake Eacham is wildlife spotting, especially birdwatching! With over 180 birds inhabiting the area, it’s truly a birdwatcher’s paradise.

While you’re by Lake Eacham for the day, pack some food and enjoy a delicious picnic by the lake. There are picnic tables around, some being sheltered, along with free electric and fuel BBQs.

Getting to Lake Eacham

The best way to reach Lake Eacham is by driving. The hour long drive from Cairns involves travelling 68 kilometers on Gillies Range Road, then turning left on Lake Barrine Road, and left again into Lakes Drive. As you arrive at the lake, there are plenty of parking spaces around
