Raise your glass to a day of relaxation, gorgeous views and great wine.

What better way to explore this world-famous wine region than to explore the finest wineries it has to offer?

Just two hours north of Sydney, the Hunter Valley wine region is home to some of the world’s most award-winning wines. The rich soils and forgiving climates allow grapes to ripen to their fullest, organically creating complex, full-flavoured wines. It’s well known for its iconic Semillon which is suitable for Asian dishes containing mild citrussy flavours and mild spice.

The Hunter Valley Wine region is split into three main regions: Pokolbin, Lovedale and Broke-Fordwic.

Here are the 5 best wineries in the Hunter Valley region to explore:

1. Sobel’s Winery

A 21-acre property containing a small, family-sized cellar door. Don’t be fooled: The winery might be small, but their variety is wide. Their approach to hand-crafted wines means a deeper focus on the quality of all their wines. The winemakers each have a hand in all processes of creation, from picking grapes to labelling the bottles. This heavy involvement of all staff means there is an automatic focus on pristine taste.

A tasting at Sobel’s is a relaxed experience, replicating a Sunday afternoon with friends. Sobel’s offers an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour with tour groups. They work with minimal footprint due to their small team.

2. De Bortoli

If the views aren’t sweet enough, savour a little glass of the iconic Noble One by De Bortoli with a background of gorgeous green. It’s a syrupy wine with notes of dates. De Bortoli Noble One is Australia’s favourite dinner party digestive.

3. Draytons Family Wines

Creak open the doors of the past, and step inside the oldest winery in Pokolbin. Suitable to its age, Drayton’s Family Wines have unsurprisingly won the title as having some of the best vintages in the region. Expect sophisticated, aged and deep-flavoured wine to compliment a classic stone-tiled building.

4. Wynwood Estate

Nestled right in the middle of the Hunter Valley, you’ll find the Wynwood Estate. With lush greenery and pristine lakes nearby, the Wynwood Estate makes an extensive range of wines including a fortified wine range based on their different vines.

5. McGuinan’s Wines

Don’t skip McGuigan’s if you’re looking to sample some Internationally-Awarded wine. Four-time winner of the International Winemaker of the Year, McGuigan’s Wines is a classic style winery, a staple of the winemaking world. The winery decor is as sharp as their dedication to quality and motivation for quality taste. Walk-ins are welcome, but pre-booking is advised. A pioneer of winemaking in the Hunter Valley, McGuigan lives and breathes winemaking.

4 Pines Brewery

It may not be a winery, but 4 Pines is well worth a visit when you’re entering the Hunter Valley. A perfect accompaniment to the wine world, 4 Pines have rooted themselves into the Hunter Valley to offer a tasty contrast to balance out your wine-filled day.

A leading pioneer of the beer sphere, make sure you get to sample some of Australia’s well-loved beers as well as their wine selection.
