Discover what you should try to avoid while exploring this ancient rainforest.
The Daintree Rainforest is Australia’s largest, spanning over 1200 square kilometres and home to an incredible array of wildlife. Whether it’s your first visit or you’ve been before, the Daintree offers plenty to see and explore. However, there are a few important things to keep in mind and avoid while you’re here.
-
Don’t dangle your legs over the water
It’s easy to forget, but dangling your legs over the water can be risky because crocodiles are present in many areas here. Crocodiles thrive in the northern tropical parts of Australia and are known to inhabit the Daintree. So, think twice before sitting down and hanging your legs over the water.
-
Don’t ignore the signs
The Daintree features numerous informative signs that teach you about the rainforest. However, crocodile warning signs are also present and should never be ignored. These signs are typically located around the ocean, rivers, and other swimming areas where crocodiles have been spotted. Other signs to look out for are cassowary signs on the side of the road, indicating some may be up ahead crossing the road. If you come across these signs, slow down a bit and keep a lookout.
-
Don’t jump into the waters without checking first
Crocodiles inhabit many of the waters in the Daintree, so avoid swimming without first checking the area. Additionally, deadly jellyfish are common in the ocean waters, particularly from October to April. If you want to swim, make sure to use designated safe areas.
-
Don’t interact with the wildlife
The Daintree is home to a diverse range of wildlife, but it’s best to avoid interacting with them. While some animals may seem approachable, park rangers advise against feeding or engaging with them. Feel free to take photos but keep your distance. If you encounter more dangerous species like cassowaries or snakes, maintain a safe distance and slowly walk away.
Don’t let these warnings deter you from visiting the Daintree! The rainforest is incredibly beautiful, with breathtaking views to enjoy. Consider booking a guided tour to explore the area safely with a knowledgeable guide.
