South Australia has an abundance of raw natural beauty, wildlife and rugged coastlines. Getting to Kangaroo Island from Cape Jervis or Penneshaw is relatively easy, and it just involves a 45-minute ferry trip.

Are you doing a half-day self-guided tour of Kangaroo Island? If you only have a half-day visit, here’s what we’d recommend you add to your itinerary!

Seal Bay Conservation Area

Head to Seal Bay, which is about an hour’s drive away from Penneshaw. It’s one of the island’s biggest seal beaches. You’ll learn about the seals in their natural habitat, and find out what the community are doing to conserve these amazing creatures. Take a guided beach tour to the seal conservation area, where you can look at these cute little creatures in their natural environment.

Little Sahara

Take a stop off at Little Sahara to make your way to the East. Make a quick stop here to see some enormous dunes that look like a movie set. Don’t forget to snap plenty of photos here! If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, make sure you grab a sandboard or a toboggan for a ride down the sand dunes! Rent your sandboarding equipment, and whizz around the dunes.

Vivonne Bay

Just a short drive away from Little Sahara, you’ll find the beautiful beach of Vivonne Bay. It was once voted as one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia! Take a wander along the jetty and dip your toes into the water. Munch on a snack and soak up the scenery!

Flinders Chase National Park

If you have time, check out the Flinders Chase National Park and the Remarkable Rocks. These interestingly shaped rocks are truly unique in their appearance. That’s because of the forceful winds and rough weather of the South Australian coast.

Here’s how you can make the most of your half day:

  • Start early
  • Pre-book tours or hire a car
  • Bring water, snacks and sunscreen
  • Watch out for the wildlife

Even in just a few hours, Kangaroo Island delivers unforgettable nature, wildlife, and landscapes. It’s a wild and wonderful taste of Australia. It’s well worth squeezing into your itinerary, so you should make it a part of your trip to South Australia – no matter the time of year you visit!
