You might scan the barren landscape and wonder what life exists in Uluru. But actually, there’s quite a lot! The Red Centre is home to some very quintessential Aussie wildlife – from marsupials to insects and reptiles.

The animals in Uluru that call this place home are some of Australia’s most iconic animals. The environment can be hot and harsh, yet some parts of this environment are teeming with life. The animals here have adapted to thrive in these harsh conditions. There are lots of flora and fauna in the area! Many of them are nocturnal, and night time in Uluru is when the the animals circulating the red rock really come out.

Thorny Devils

This little devil might look menacing, but it’s all for show! These small lizards are home to the Dragon Lizard family. It looks dangerous and spiky to successfully ward off other predators. It is a very harmless creature that keeps to itself. Thorny Devils can grow up to 20 cm long, and they have a small ‘head’ on their back. This is designed to scare off predators.

Say hello to Australia’s biggest marsupial! Red kangaroos look very different to their grey relatives! They blend in with their chalky red surroundings, and they’re a lot bigger than grey kangaroos, growing up to 90kg. Their fur is red and silky. As Australia’s largest marsupial, they can grow up to be 2.4 metres tall.

The dingo is another quintessential animal in Uluru! They are a mix of wolf and dog, but they howl instead of barking. You’ll more than likely see one very early in the morning, at dawn. This is when they can catch kangaroos. Birds and reptiles are also catchable…

Make sure you don’t give a dingo any of your food! Although they are generally quite harmless, they are known for being rebellious when it comes to stealing food.

Centralian Tree Frog

These cute little frogs love a warm environment! Look closely into rocky crevices and nooks and crannies around Uluru. Then you’ll be able to find these little creatures peeping under rocks and stones. They’ll frequently pop up just before rainfall comes, as they can predict when large rainfalls will be arriving – they’re also around a lot after the rainfalls.
