Puffing Billy Railway history

The Puffing Bily Railway was constructed in the 1900s as a way to connect the remote areas in Victoria. It was a crucial resource for people living in rural Victoria. The train carried passengers, mail, livestock, and more.

The railway has been well cared for and maintained by the Puffing Billy Preservation Society. Today, the railway is still loved by many locals and travellers.

The train ride

When you arrive at Belgrave, you’ll queue up at the charming train depot to grab your ticket. Once you’ve got your ticket, you can grab a coffee, take some photos, and find your train car. There are benches in each train car, but most people opt to sit on the windowsills. That’s right – you can enjoy the train ride with your legs dangling over the side!

When the steam engine is ready to depart the depot, you’ll hear the train whistle blow. As you start exiting Belgrave, there will be lots of employees and visitors waving to you.

Then you’re off as you head into the heart of the Dandenong Ranges. You’ll have plenty of time to admire the spectacular landscape from either side of the train. You will see rolling hills, lush forests, and you may even be able to spot a koala. You will also see lots of people stopping to wave to the train as you pass walking paths and country homes.

The train will take you past old depots including Menzies Creek, Emerald and Lakeside. The final stop of the magical train journey is in Gembrook. Here, you will be able to visit a museum, check out the gift shop, and enjoy a delicious lunch or snack.
