A brief history

Opened in 1871, it is hailed today as one of the most picturesque test cricket grounds in the world. Since hosting its first Test cricket match in 1884, the Adelaide Oval has hosted sixteen different sports. From Australian Rules Football to baseball and hockey, the Adelaide Oval has been the perfect stage for elite athletes from around the world.

It’s not just sporting events the oval has hosted, but major concerts too. Giants of the music industry such as Madonna, Michael Jackson, Elton John and David Bowie have graced the stadium. Adelaide Oval comes alive when there’s an event on, with locals flooding into the stands, ready to cheer and have a great time.

Many who visit have memories of the Moreton Bay Fig Trees, some of which were planted back in the 1890s. The trees aren’t the only historic things here, the heritage-listed wooden scoreboard has been standing at the northern end of the ground since 1911!

You’ll be treated to the VIP tour experience, exploring areas not usually open to the public before breathing in the crisp air 50 meters above the hallowed turf below. True Australian Rules fans will cherish the opportunity to watch a quarter of an AFL match from the sky, there’s no better seat in the house!

Visiting the Adelaide Oval

If you’re keen to see the Adelaide Oval in all its glory then you simply must visit during an event. The oval is home ground for South Australia’s two AFL teams, the Adelaide Crows and the Port Adelaide Power. Any match at the oval featuring one of these teams is a great experience. The air becomes electric with anticipation and excitement as the teams run out to their songs.

For an extra exciting experience, make your way to the Adelaide derby, known as the Showdown. The Showdown is the most intense game of the season for these two teams, as they fight it out to prove they’re the best team in the state.
