Why You Should Visit the Great Ocean Road This Spring
Although we’re biased, we think that any time of the year is good to go and visit the Great Ocean Road.
With blooming wildflowers, green landscapes and plenty of whale watching opportunities, you’ll see heaps of gorgeous views while you’re exploring the Great Ocean Road during the spring months!
The best things about visiting the Great Ocean Road during the summer months:
- Colourful scenery
- Rainforest feels fresh and lively after the rains of winter
- You’ll catch the end of the whale-watching season
Greener landscape
Catch the lush green landscapes before they turn brown in the summer sun. The wintery rains drench the bush, making everything feel greener. The ferny areas are particularly alive (take a rainforest walk through Melba Gully and you’ll soak up these wonderful rainforest vibes).
Waterfalls may have heavier flow
Spring usually has a rainy beginning. If this is the case, then you can expect some heavier waterfalls as they rain down the rocky edges. Check out Hopetoun Falls or Erskine Falls for rainforest-meets-waterfall vibes.
Watch whales at the end of the migration season
You might catch whales at the very end of their migration journey! From May to October, whales will swim up the coast. They’ll normally go through Warrnambool to Logan’s Beach. Winter is classically the peak season – but you might still catch a small glimpse of these majestic creatures during the early springtime. This is normally a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Less crowds
Normally, the summer time is the busiest time to visit the Great Ocean Road. Expect heaps of crowds gathering around the 12 Apostles lookouts, and loads of Melbournians flocking to the coast for their summer holidays! Popular viewpoints like the Twelve Apostles might feel a little less crowded, and you might queue just a little bit less for your sausage roll or coffee in Lorne.
Wildlife is more active
If wildlife is your thing, then you’re in luck! Spring is the prime time for Aussie native wildlife to come out and say hello. With longer daylight hours, the koalas at Kennett River chill out for longer in the tall eucalyptus trees, and the colourful birds love to flock in between the branches in the forests.
You’ll have higher chances of spotting these animals – and the mild weather makes these walks far more enjoyable. No puffa jacket needed!
Catch the wonderful Great Ocean Road in the fresh spring weather! The sea air is fresher, the landscapes are far more colourful, and the wildlife is vibrant.
Your ultimate Australian tour this spring
If you’re wondering where you should go in Australia this spring, the Great Ocean Road should be number one on your bucket list! With a cool breeze, temperatures are far more palatable than the rest of the country.
