The Blue Mountains is a rugged mountain range located some 50 kilometres west of Sydney’s Central Business District.

The Three Sisters, Blue Mountains

Its close proximity to Sydney, stunning mountainous landscape and mythical status makes it a must-see for Sydneysiders, Aussie tourists and international travellers alike.

So, what is it about the Blue Mountains that makes it such a desired location for travellers from all walks of life?

  • Unparalleled scenery

The Blue Mountains is a hiker’s dreamworld, with weaving paths leading to pristine waterfalls just the beginning of the region’s natural wonderscape. Hikers can traverse their way to the incredible Wentworth Falls, a 187-metre, three-tiered waterfall that has been the awe of hikers for decades. Wentworth Falls is the centrepiece of a walking route that includes other beautiful natural sites like Prince’s Rock, Undercliff Track and the invigorating Weeping Rock waterfall.

  • The perfect picnic place

Weekenders delight in having the opportunity to pack a hearty lunch and take it to one of the many picnic spots the Blue Mountains has to offer. One of the most popular locations has to be the Leura Cascades, a mystical spot where water trickles peacefully down rocky layers and bell miner birds cheekily mimic the cry of the lyrebird.

Another stunning spot to picnic is at Lyrebird Dell, where a short walk through ferns takes you to a gorgeous shallow pool and small waterfall. There are tables set up near the falls for you to enjoy your lunch after cooling off in the pool.

  • Learn local legends

Not many Aussie kids grew up without hearing the legend of the Three Sisters. By far the most instantly recognisable natural attraction the Mountains has to offer, part of its mystique comes from the famous Indigenous legend, about three sisters of the Katoomba tribe who were turned to stone to protect them during a battle to win their hands in marriage.

The Three Sisters is truly an incredible natural landmark, with sandstone formations standing at over 900m high. They are easily viewable from Echo Point but can also be accessed from one of the other walking trails surrounding the landmark.

  • Enjoy tea with a view

The Megalong Valley Tea Rooms have been refreshing happy visitors for over 60 years and it has simply never lost its appeal. Diners enjoy scones worthy of any CWA first prize award whilst enjoying the view across the upper Blue Mountains – the perfect way to top off an unforgettable visit to one of Australia’s favourite tourist gems.
